Is it me or does anyone else think Sitka herring has come early this year? Is it because Easter is early this year or is it because as I get older time moves faster? I can't decide.
To be honest with you, I haven't completely been following it. I just read the titles of the news feeds I get. Hauling Gear
http://www.blog.haulinggear.com has been doing a whiz-bang job at keeping up to date on the when-abouts of this crazy fishery.
It is crazy, too. Have you ever seen footage? It used to be all crazy
and under the radar, but now thanks to YouTube there is no t-boning that goes amiss. Here is an amateur clip that isn't the best quality, but give you a pretty good flavor of the fishery:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn2cRyRf68o. I once worked on the Leading Lady, the boat that is in the foreground at the beginning of the video. He's not afraid to throw an elbow every now and again.
The following clip is a bit more professionally done. It doesn't have the drama of the previous clip but show the process of catching herring to off-loading to a tender.
